Hi there! Welcome back to the Crown Academy blog!
So far we’ve covered many grammatical topics such as modal verbs in English, the difference between the present simple and continuous tenses, and many other topics relating to Crown Academy, our Direct English Method, and some fun facts about the UK.
Speaking of the UK, I thought today I would write about popular music that we enjoy here in the UK. Throughout the history of the UK, many cultures and peoples have made this island their home, bringing different music and styles with them. Here are just a few styles of music enjoyed here in the UK.
Britpop. Britpop is a type of rock music that is very heavily influenced by bands such as the Beatles. It’s characterised by poppy sounding melodies in a rock band format, and the preference of singing in the native accent of a singer, rather than in an American accent, which is a very popular thing done by singers today. Famous Britpop bands include Stone Roses, Oasis, and Blur.
Grime. Grime is very popular across the UK, especially among the younger generations. Like Britpop, grime artists rap in their own accents instead of trying to sound American. Slang is used a lot in grime, whether the rapper is from London or from other parts of the UK, so for listeners from outside the UK it can be quite difficult to understand! Some examples of grime artists include Stormzy, Wiley, Dialect, Lethal Bizzle and Aitch.
Classical music. Classical music has long had a rich history in the UK. From composers such as Henry Purcell and Orlando Gibbons to the likes of Edward Elgar and Benjamin Britten, classical music has done a lot to shape the history of the UK. Composers such as Handel have been commissioned by members of the Royal Family to write music for them, and one of the biggest events of the year, the Proms, celebrates classical music not only in the UK, but around the world too.
